Did you know in about 1 in 50 people suffer from OCD? Where are these people? Chances are you know many individuals who struggle with OCD. This is not something that most people would like to talk about. Many may feel shame or feel trapped. Many individuals do not even know they have OCD.
If you are like many individuals that I see with obsessive-compulsive disorder you have seen many therapists. You might've questioned multiple times why the therapy isn't working for you. In my experience it appears as if a majority of therapists work with OCD but do not actually specialize in it. This means that you are getting some of the treatment for OCD but not the meat of it. I do not know how many times I have heard the words, "I can't believe this is actually working!" or "I completely forgot to feel anxious about this thing". This is what you can experience when you are doing the true and correct treatment for OCD. Typically you must be doing exposure and response prevention (ERP), not only that but you need to be doing it the correct way. There are other elements in this treatment as well. As long as we are doing ERP as the main focus we can add mindfulness, dialectical behavioral therapy, and other modes of therapy that might work well for you.
If you are new to exposure and response prevention you may be questioning what this even is. My goal for you when going through treatment is to help you live life a little bit more uncertain. This probably seems the opposite of what you thought. Most people come into therapy to figure out their problems. When it comes to OCD, logic and figuring things out do not work. Think about the topic that you struggle with. How many times have you logically thought through a scenario or someone else has given you reassurance that has made you feel good very temporarily. If figuring it out and logic worked you wouldn't be continuing to have the intrusive thoughts or the anxiety attached.
OCD can come about in many different forms. We see on TV that OCD tends to be related to contamination or putting things in a certain order. While some individuals may struggle with this most have intrusive thoughts that plague their day. These thoughts can look like this, "you better go check that stove again or your house is going to burn down". "Are you sure you didn't touch that child inappropriately?" "God is probably disappointed in you." "you need to go wash your hands, what if you get someone else sick."
This is only a touch of what many people experience. I have created a list of some common OCD topics.
